FAQ : For Rollers on a printing press

How do I know my rollers should be replaced ?
When a roller starts to produce a messy, streaky, and faded finish. Of course often times poor cleaning habits and high pressure can produce these results very quickly. On the other hand proper care goes a very long way.

How should I store and care for my rollers?
A roller that is not in use should be wrapped and stored indoors in a cool place away from the sun and UV lights. Leaning a roller on a hard surface for a prolonged period of time, depending on the weight, may result in a flat spot. Rollers in the press should be cleaned regularly and thoroughly. Never over-tighten rollers on the press, this causes fast breakdown and poor ink and water transfer.

Should I use my old bearings?
It depends, using your old bearings can be risky and may cause problems.

How should I remove or mount my bearings?
A bearing may be removed with a bearing press and should be installed using something similar to an Arbor press insuring that the bearing is mounted evenly.

Where can I get my bearings?
Quality Rollers is also a bearing dealer for American, German, and Chinese bearings of any kind. sales@qualityrollers.net

How can I avoid glazing?
A roller will avoid glazing if it is properly and frequently cleaned. Glazing is caused by buildup on the surface of the roller and often causes the press operator to use more ink and water resulting in drying problems and a messy finish.

What is the right amount of pressure when setting my rollers?
When installing new rollers, back off the older ones and have them just make contact. Remember, new rollers are slightly thicker and require that extra room. Tightening rollers too much will not allow ink and water to flow freely and result in costly repairs. Tightening will allow rollers to heat up and put a great load on the bearing causing restriction in movement. Heat causes rollers to shrink and throw off ink and water balance along with color variation.

How soon can I expect my rollers to be recovered?
An local order that is received today may cure tonight and be ground and polished tomorrow, ready for delivery, for any other order just include shipping timeframe.
